Living in & Doing Business in Lake City > Green Living in Lake City

We are a green community and encourage our citizens and visitors to save energy, resources and to recycle.  We’re glad you’ve chosen to spend some time in Lake City and want you to enjoy our surroundings.  Here’s some information about local regulations and customs that may apply to you:
  • Please keep your trash/garbage in a secure location during your stay and remove all garbage and refuse accumulated when you leave.
  • The Hinsdale County Transfer Station recycles aluminum, cardboard and glass for FREE.  They also take small electronics for a small fee.
  • In addition to all of those items; plastics #1 & #2, newsprint, magazines and more can be dropped off in Gunnison at Airport Road (Rio Grande) and 10th Street.
  • Lake City has a wildlife protection ordinance that prohibits the feeding of wildlife.  Please do not feed wild animals.  Bears, in particular, are an increasing nuisance in Lake City and feeding them could result in their destruction.
  • Please keep your dog on a leash and pick up any waste.
  • Please refrain from activities that produce loud noises and playing loud music or musical instruments from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • Residents and visitors appreciate our very dark, nighttime sky that allows full view of the stars and other celestial bodies.  Please avoid the prolonged use of bright outdoor lighting that may wash out the nighttime sky.

Weatherizing Your Home

The Town of Lake City offers extensive information to homeowners about weatherizing their homes, with an emphasis on historic homes, at our National Historic District Weatherizing Section.
